Hearty spiced pear cider recipe

A close-up of a glass mug filled with warm spiced pear cider, topped with a cinnamon stick and a sprinkle of cinnamon, alongside slices of lemon and cinnamon sticks on a wooden cutting board.

This cider tastes bright and cozy because fresh pears bring a delicate floral sweetness that balances beautifully with warm cinnamon and vanilla. It pairs wonderfully with blue cheese, walnuts, or a warm brie. Serve in a mug with a thin pear slice floating on top for an elegant fall presentation.

Ingredients

  • 4 ripe pears, cored and chopped
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 vanilla bean, split, or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Directions

  1. Combine the chopped pears, water, cinnamon sticks, and vanilla bean in a large pot.
  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes until the pears soften.
  3. Remove from heat and mash the pears slightly to release more flavor.
  4. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer, pressing to extract the liquid.
  5. Stir in the honey and lemon juice.
  6. Reheat gently before serving.

Tips

  • Use very ripe pears for the sweetest, most fragrant cider.
  • Mashing the pears before straining helps release more juice and flavor.
  • For an easier option, use pear juice as a base and simply simmer with spices for 15 minutes.

Variations

  • Add a splash of pear brandy for an adult version.
  • Combine with apple for a mixed fall fruit cider.
  • Add a few cardamom pods for extra warmth.
