Cabbage white butterflies, often called cabbage moths, are one of the most persistent pests in a vegetable garden, since their caterpillars can shred brassica leaves within days of hatching. These butterflies are territorial by nature and tend to avoid laying eggs where they believe another female has already claimed the spot, since overcrowded leaves mean less food for the next generation. A simple white decoy shaped like a resting butterfly exploits this instinct, tricking approaching females into believing the area is occupied so they move elsewhere. It is a nontoxic, no-spray way to protect cabbage, broccoli, kale, and other brassicas, and it costs almost nothing to make from recycled household plastic.
Materials
- White plastic, such as milk jugs, yogurt containers, or egg cartons
- Scissors or a craft knife
- Thin wire, wooden skewers, or sticks for stakes
- Hot glue or tape
- Light gray or black marker for wing details, optional
Directions
- Cut the white plastic into butterfly or moth shapes, roughly 1.5 to 2 inches wide, matching the size of a real cabbage white butterfly.
- Draw a few light markings on the wings with a marker if desired, since added detail can make the decoy more convincing.
- Attach each cutout to a stake, skewer, or wire using glue or tape, positioning it so the wings sit a few inches above where the leaves will be.
- Make several decoys, since one is rarely enough to cover a full garden bed.
How to Use
- Push the stakes into the soil throughout the garden bed, spacing decoys every 2 to 3 feet among the brassica plants.
- Position each decoy so it is visible from above, since that is the angle an approaching butterfly will see first.
- Reposition or replace decoys every few days to a week, since butterflies can learn to ignore a shape that never moves or changes.
- Combine decoys with other prevention methods for the best overall protection, since no single method is foolproof on its own.
Effectiveness
Decoys fall into the category of a low-cost, low-effort deterrent rather than a proven, high-reliability control method. There is some real entomological reasoning behind why they work, but results vary widely from garden to garden.
- The territorial instinct behind the decoy effect is grounded in actual butterfly behavior, which is why the method is not purely folklore
- Many home gardeners report a noticeable reduction in eggs and caterpillar damage, though no controlled studies offer exact percentage figures
- Smaller gardens with concentrated brassica plantings tend to see better results than large or open fields
- Butterflies can learn to ignore decoys over time, since the shapes do not move, react, or change position
- High local butterfly populations tend to overwhelm the deterrent effect, since more females are competing to find egg-laying sites
- Faded or weathered decoys lose their white color and become less convincing
- Decoys work best as a supplemental layer rather than a standalone solution, especially when paired with regular leaf inspection and row covers during peak egg-laying periods in late spring and midsummer
Tips
- Hang a few decoys slightly higher than the plants, since real butterflies often scout from above before landing
- Check the undersides of leaves regularly for eggs, since no decoy method is completely foolproof
- Reuse white milk jugs, yogurt cups, white foam egg cartons, or plastic lids cut into wing shapes for a fast, free way to make several decoys at once
- If we do the cutting a little artistically and more realistically, these can actually look pretty and also be functional in our garden. All depends on how much we want to put into it. A rough shape will still work.
