Hearty sautéed asparagus

Ingredients

  • 1 bunch fresh asparagus (about 1 lb)
  • 1–2 tablespoons olive oil (or butter)
  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Lemon wedge or zest, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep the Asparagus
    • Rinse asparagus under cool water.
    • Snap or trim off the tough woody ends (usually about 1–2 inches).
  2. Heat the Pan
    • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Add olive oil (or butter) and let it get hot but not smoking.
  3. Sauté
    • Add the asparagus in a single layer.
    • Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
    • Sauté for 4–6 minutes, turning occasionally, until asparagus is bright green and just tender. (Thicker stalks may need a minute or two longer.)
  4. Add Garlic (Optional)
    • If using garlic, add it in the last 1–2 minutes of cooking to avoid burning.
    • Stir frequently.
  5. Finish & Serve
    • Taste and adjust seasoning.
    • Squeeze a little lemon juice or zest over the top if desired.
    • Serve immediately.

Tips

  • For extra flavor, add a sprinkle of parmesan cheese, sesame seeds, bacon bits or toasted nuts before serving.
  • You can also add a splash of white wine or balsamic vinegar during the last minute of cooking for a different twist.
