Hearty Lemon Drops cocktail recipe

A lemon cocktail served in a martini glass, garnished with a lemon slice and a sugared rim. Fresh lemons are placed on a marble countertop alongside the glass.

The lemon drop is a bright, citrus-forward cocktail that balances tart fresh lemon juice with the clean sweetness of simple syrup and the smooth warmth of premium vodka. The sugared rim adds a crystalline crunch that softens each sip, while the triple sec deepens the citrus profile with a subtle orange note. Served ice cold in a chilled martini glass, this cocktail is elegant yet refreshingly easy to make. It pairs beautifully with light appetizers, seafood, fresh fruit, or soft cheeses and is a perfect choice for warm afternoons, brunches, or celebratory gatherings.

Ingredients

For the cocktail

  • 2 oz vodka (citrus vodka works beautifully)
  • 1 oz fresh lemon juice (about 1 large lemon)
  • 3/4 oz triple sec or Cointreau
  • 1/2 oz simple syrup (adjust to taste)
  • Ice for shaking

For the sugared rim

  • 1 lemon wedge
  • 2 tablespoons superfine or granulated sugar

Simple syrup (makes extra)

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup water

Directions

Simple syrup

  1. Combine sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Stir until sugar is fully dissolved, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat and let cool completely before using.
  4. Store in a sealed jar in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Sugared rim

  1. Run a lemon wedge around the outer edge of a chilled martini glass.
  2. Pour sugar onto a small flat plate.
  3. Dip and rotate the rim of the glass in the sugar until evenly coated.
  4. Set aside.

Cocktail

  1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
  2. Add vodka, fresh lemon juice, triple sec, and simple syrup.
  3. Shake vigorously for 15 to 20 seconds until well chilled.
  4. Strain into the prepared sugared rim glass.
  5. Garnish with a thin lemon wheel or twist.

Tips and variations

  • Always use fresh lemon juice, never bottled. The flavor difference is significant.
  • Chill your martini glass in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes before serving for the best experience.
  • Adjust simple syrup up or down depending on how tart or sweet you prefer your drink.
  • Use superfine sugar for the rim for a more refined, even coating.
  • For a stronger citrus punch, use Limoncello in place of or alongside the triple sec.
  • For a frozen lemon drop, blend all ingredients with 1 cup of ice until smooth.
  • For a lemon drop spritzer, skip the sugared rim, pour over ice in a highball glass, and top with a splash of club soda or sparkling water.
  • For a lavender lemon drop, substitute lavender simple syrup for regular simple syrup and garnish with a sprig of fresh lavender.
  • For a batch version for a party, multiply all cocktail ingredients by the number of servings and mix in a pitcher. Shake individual portions to order, or serve over a large ice block in a punch bowl.
  • Citrus vodka brands like Absolut Citron or Ketel One Citroen elevate this cocktail noticeably.
