Hearty Air Fryer Crappie Fillets

Crispy air-fried catch of the day.

These air-fried crappie fillets are a deliciously crispy and healthy way to enjoy fresh fish. The blend of panko breadcrumbs, cornmeal, and Parmesan cheese creates a golden crust that’s light yet flavorful, while seasonings like paprika, garlic, and onion powder add a savory depth. Cooking in the air fryer ensures the fillets stay tender and juicy inside without excess oil. Serve these fillets with lemon wedges for a zesty finish, alongside creamy coleslaw, roasted vegetables, or seasoned fries for a complete meal. We like tartar sauce with this recipe. Perfect for a quick dinner or a casual gathering.

Ingredients

  • 6–8 crappie fillets (cleaned and dried)
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs (or regular breadcrumbs)
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs (beaten)
  • Cooking spray or olive oil spray
  • Lemon wedges (for serving)
  • Chopped fresh parsley for garnish

Directions

  1. Preheat the Air Fryer
Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 5 minutes.
  2. Prepare the Breading
In a shallow bowl, mix together the panko breadcrumbs, cornmeal, Parmesan cheese (if using), garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, black pepper, and salt.
  3. Egg Wash
In a separate bowl, beat the eggs.
  4. Coat the Fillets
    • Dip each crappie fillet into the egg wash, ensuring it’s fully coated.
    • Then, dredge the fillet in the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to ensure an even coating.
  5. Arrange in the Air Fryer
Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place the breaded fillets in a single layer in the basket. Avoid overcrowding to ensure even cooking. Spray the tops of the fillets lightly with cooking spray.
  6. Cook the Fillets
Air fry the fillets for 8–10 minutes, flipping halfway through. Cook until the fillets are golden brown and crispy. The internal temperature should reach 145°F (63°C).
  7. Serve
Serve hot with lemon wedges, tartar sauce, or your favorite dipping sauce. Pair with a side of coleslaw or roasted vegetables for a complete meal.
