Let all thy joys be as the month of May.
– Francis Quarles

Week 18 in northern gardens a fun time of year for both gardening and bird watching. As temperatures rise, gardeners can start sowing cool-season crops like lettuce, spinach, and radishes. It’s also a good time to prepare beds for later planting of warm-season vegetables. Perennials such as daylilies and hostas can be divided and transplanted, taking advantage of the mild weather. Bird watchers in northern gardens will delight in the return of migratory species like orioles. Setting up our feeders with seeds and nectar can attract these colorful visitors. Putting out a small dish of grape jelly is a sure way to lure an oriole in for a sweet snack. Observing their lively activities among budding trees and shrubs adds joy to the spring season. This week offers a perfect blend of horticultural tasks and avian appreciation.
