Planting Beets

Growing and Care

  3. Fertilizing: Use a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) once the plants are established, avoiding excessive nitrogen that can lead to lush foliage but poor root development.
  4. Weeding: Keep the beet bed free of weeds, which can compete for nutrients and water.
  5. Pest and Disease Control: Monitor for pests such as aphids and leaf miners. Use organic pest control methods if needed, such as neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Harvesting

  1. Timing: Beets are ready to harvest when the roots are 1.5-3 inches in diameter, typically 50-70 days after planting.
  2. Method: Gently loosen the soil around the roots with a garden fork and carefully pull the beets from the ground. Avoid damaging the roots.
  3. Storing: Trim the leaves to about 1 inch above the root and store the beets in a cool, dry place. The greens can also be harvested and used in salads or cooked dishes.
