It’s a flavorful way to enjoy a classic burger while staying health conscious. Serve with a side of mixed greens or a light, fresh salad to enhance the meal’s nutritional value. Adding a side of roasted sweet potato wedges provides a wholesome, balanced accompaniment.
Ingredients
- 1 lb lean ground beef (90% lean)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 whole-grain or low-calorie hamburger buns
- 4 slices low-fat cheddar or Swiss cheese
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 large tomato, sliced
- 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cup baby spinach or lettuce
- Optional: nitrates-free bacon, pickles, mustard, or low-fat mayo
Directions
- Preheat Grill: Preheat your grill to medium-high heat.
- Prepare Beef Patties: In a bowl, combine ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Form the mixture into 4 even patties.
- Grill Patties: Grill the beef patties for 4-5 minutes per side or until they reach your desired doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each patty and close the grill lid to melt the cheese.
- Toast Buns: Brush the inside of the buns with olive oil and toast them on the grill for 1-2 minutes or until golden brown.
- Assemble Burgers: Place the cooked patties on the toasted buns. Top with tomato slices, red onion, and spinach or lettuce. Add pickles, mustard, or mayo if desired.
- Serve: Serve immediately for a delicious and healthy burger option.
Tips
- For Extra Flavor: Add a sprinkle of fresh herbs or spices to the patties before grilling. Top with avocado, bacon strips, caramelized onions and mushrooms, or BBQ sauce to mix it up. (or course these options are not quite as light or healthy but tasty!)
- Lower Calorie Option: Use a lettuce wrap instead of buns for a lower-carb version.
