Week 31 Gardening & Birding

Live in each season as it passes; breath air, drink the drink, taste the fruit and resign yourself to the influences of each. Let them be your only diet drink and botanical medicines.
– Henry David Thoreau

Week 31 summer begins to transition into late-season growth. In the garden, focus on maintaining plant health during the heat while preparing for the upcoming fall. Water plants deeply in the early morning to prevent evaporation and ensure strong root growth. Deadhead flowers like zinnias and marigolds to encourage continued blooming, and harvest summer vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers regularly. Begin clearing out spent crops and weeds to prepare garden beds for fall planting. This is also an excellent time to sow cool-season crops like lettuce, spinach, and radishes for a late harvest.

For bird watching, early August offers dynamic activity as many bird species prepare for migration. Keep feeders stocked with high-energy foods like sunflower seeds, suet, and nectar to attract a variety of birds, including hummingbirds and finches. Providing fresh, clean water in birdbaths is crucial during the heat, as birds need hydration and a place to cool off. Pay attention to fledglings learning to forage and fly, offering a unique opportunity to observe their behaviors. Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times for bird watching, as birds are most active during these cooler hours. Week 31 is ideal for nurturing your garden and enjoying the vibrant world of birds.
