Hearty Manhattan

A crystal cocktail glass filled with a dark amber drink, ice cubes, and a cherry on top, placed on a marble surface.

The Manhattan is one of the most sophisticated and enduring cocktails in the American canon, born in New York City in the 1880s. What makes it so deeply satisfying is the interplay between the bold, grainy warmth of rye whiskey and the herbal, bittersweet complexity of sweet vermouth, all sharpened by the aromatic bite of Angostura bitters. Stirring rather than shaking keeps it silky and crystal clear. Served up in a chilled coupe or on a large ice rock, it pairs beautifully with charcuterie, aged cheeses, dark chocolate, or a quiet evening. This is a drink that rewards slow sipping.

Ingredients

Classic recipe (serves 1)

  • 2 oz rye whiskey (or bourbon)
  • 1 oz sweet vermouth
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 dash orange bitters (optional but recommended)
  • Ice for stirring
  • Garnish -Luxardo maraschino cherry or a lemon or orange twist

Directions

  1. Chill a coupe or cocktail glass by filling it with ice water and setting it aside.
  2. Add the rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, Angostura bitters, and orange bitters to a mixing glass.
  3. Fill the mixing glass with ice and stir steadily for 30 to 40 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted.
  4. Discard the ice water from your chilled glass.
  5. Strain the cocktail into the chilled glass using a Hawthorne or julep strainer.
  6. Garnish with a Luxardo cherry dropped in or a twist expressed over the glass and placed on the rim.

Tips

  • Always stir a Manhattan, never shake. Shaking clouds the drink and changes the texture.
  • Rye gives a spicier, drier result. Bourbon gives a softer, sweeter result. Both are correct.
  • Use a quality sweet vermouth such as Carpano Antica Formula, Dolin Rouge, or Cocchi Storico Vermouth di Torino.
  • Keep your vermouth refrigerated after opening and use it within 4 to 6 weeks for best flavor.
  • A large single ice cube in a rocks glass is a beautiful and valid alternative to serving it up.

Variations

  • Brandy Manhattan – Classic Midwest variation using brandy instead of whiskey. This is actually the most popular version in Wisconsin and parts of Minnesota, often served with a splash of soda and fruit garnish.
  • Perfect Manhattan – Use 1/2 oz sweet vermouth and 1/2 oz dry vermouth for a drier, more balanced profile.
  • Dry Manhattan – Replace the sweet vermouth entirely with dry vermouth. Crisp and austere.
  • Black Manhattan: Substitute Averna Amaro for the sweet vermouth. Deeply herbal, slightly bitter, and complex.
  • Smoked Manhattan – Use a smoky Islay Scotch in place of rye, or use a smoking gun over the finished glass. Dramatic and rich.
  • Mezcal Manhattan – Swap the rye for a reposado mezcal. Earthy, smoky, and beautifully unexpected.
  • Maple Manhattan – Add 1/4 oz real maple syrup alongside the vermouth. A natural fit for a Minnesota autumn evening.
  • Espresso Manhattan – Add 1/2 oz cold brew concentrate. Bold, caffeinated, and surprisingly elegant.
  • Cherry Manhattan – Add 1/4 oz Luxardo Maraschino liqueur for a deeper cherry note that complements the bitters beautifully.
