Hearty Hugo Spritz cocktail recipe

The Hugo Spritz is a refreshing northern Italian cocktail that tastes like a warm afternoon in the Alps. Elderflower liqueur brings a delicate floral sweetness that pairs beautifully with crisp Prosecco, while fresh mint and lime add brightness and a cooling finish. The soda water keeps it light and effervescent, making every sip feel celebratory without being heavy. It is elegant enough for entertaining yet easy enough for a quiet evening on the porch. Serve it in a large wine glass over ice, garnished generously with fresh mint and a lime wheel for a drink that looks as lovely as it tastes.

Ingredients

  • 3 oz Prosecco, chilled
  • 1 oz elderflower liqueur (St-Germain is the classic choice)
  • 1 oz soda water
  • 4 to 5 fresh mint leaves, plus a sprig for garnish
  • 2 thin lime or lemon slices
  • Ice cubes

Directions

  1. Fill a large wine glass or balloon glass generously with ice cubes.
  2. Add the fresh mint leaves and one lime or lemon slice to the glass.
  3. Pour in the elderflower liqueur.
  4. Pour in the Prosecco slowly to preserve the bubbles.
  5. Top with soda water and give it one gentle stir.
  6. Garnish with a fresh mint sprig and the remaining citrus slice on the rim.
  7. Serve immediately.

Tips and variations

  • Use St-Germain elderflower liqueur for the most authentic flavor, though any quality elderflower liqueur works well
  • For a non-alcoholic version, substitute Prosecco with sparkling white grape juice and elderflower cordial for the liqueur
  • Add a splash of fresh lime juice if you prefer a slightly more tart finish
  • Frozen mint ice cubes made ahead of time are a beautiful and practical touch for parties
  • Cava or any dry sparkling wine can substitute for Prosecco in a pinch
  • For a stronger elderflower flavor, increase the liqueur to 1.5 oz
  • This cocktail pairs beautifully with light appetizers, fresh cheeses, cucumber sandwiches, or summer salads
