Hearty white rice

Light, tender, flavorful rice with a hint of tropical sweetness.

This fluffy steamed white rice is a delightful accompaniment to any dish due to its light texture and neutral flavor, which soaks up sauces and gravies beautifully. The process of rinsing removes excess starch, ensuring the grains stay separate, while the gentle simmering and resting period allow the rice to become perfectly tender. Adding a quarter teaspoon of coconut oil infuses the rice with a subtle hint of tropical flavor and adds a touch of richness. The oil also helps to enhance the fluffiness by preventing the grains from sticking together. It’s a simple addition with a delicious impact.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup white rice (short-grain or medium-grain is best for fluffiness)
  • 2 1/4 cups water
  • 1/4 teaspoon coconut oil (optional)
  • Pinch of salt (optional)

Directions

  1. Rinse the Rice: Place the rice in a fine mesh strainer and rinse under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and helps the rice to be fluffy.
  2. Combine Ingredients: In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed rice, water, coconut oil (if using) and a pinch of salt (if using).
  3. Boil and Simmer: Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Once it starts boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, and let it simmer for about 18-20 minutes. Avoid lifting the lid during cooking.
  4. Rest the Rice: After the cooking time, remove the saucepan from the heat and let it sit, covered, for an additional 5-10 minutes. This allows the rice to steam and become even fluffier.
  5. Fluff and Serve: Gently fluff the rice with a fork and serve.
