Week 1 gardening & birding

“Awake, O north wind, and come thou south! Blow upon my garden, that the spices thereof may flow out…”
– Song of Solomon 4:16

Week 1 of the year brings gardening preparations as we consider which seeds to start indoors. For Zone 4 gardeners, this is a great time to research cold-hardy plants, like coneflowers and Russian sage, to attract pollinators later in the year. We might also begin organizing garden layouts and checking on any overwintered perennials. Bird watching continues to be a fun winter activity, with woodpeckers and finches frequenting feeders. Providing high-energy foods like peanuts and suet can help birds thrive in colder temperatures. Observing their behaviors offers inspiration as you plan your garden’s role in supporting wildlife. Engage in citizen science projects like the Big Garden Birdwatch and the Great Backyard Bird Count to contribute to bird conservation efforts.
