These scalloped potatoes with ham combine tender potato slices with savory diced ham and a cheesy creamy, seasoned sauce. Serve this hearty dish with a fresh green salad, steamed vegetables, or roasted asparagus for a balanced meal. A crusty bread or dinner rolls also complement it well.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds potatoes (about 6 cups sliced)
- 2 cups cooked ham, diced
- 3 cups shredded cheese
- 1 small onion, grated
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 3-4 cups heavy whipping cream (milk or half-and-half for a lighter sauce)
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Garnish with chives or green onions (optional)
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Make the sauce: In a large saucepan, melt 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour, parsley, thyme, salt, and pepper until smooth. Gradually add the milk, stirring constantly. Bring the mixture to a boil and cook for 2 minutes until thickened.
- Layer the ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the sliced potatoes, diced ham, shredded cheese and grated onion. Place half of the mixture in a greased 2-1/2-quart baking dish. Top with half of the sauce. Repeat the layers.
- Bake: Cover the dish and bake for 65-75 minutes until the potatoes are almost tender. Dot with the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter. Bake uncovered for an additional 15-20 minutes until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
