This is one of the easiest and most nostalgic ways to preserve fall leaves, and it is perfect if we want quick results without special equipment. The heat from the iron melts a thin layer of wax around the leaf, locking in moisture and color while flattening it for display. It is a wonderful activity to do with family since it requires minimal setup, and the finished leaves have a soft, slightly translucent glow when held up to light. These make charming bookmarks, card decorations, or window hangings.
Materials
- Freshly collected, flat autumn leaves
- Wax paper
- Iron
- Ironing board or heat safe surface
- Thin cloth or paper towel
- Scissors
Directions
- Choose leaves that are dry and relatively flat, avoiding ones that are brittle or curling.
- Cut two sheets of wax paper slightly larger than your leaves.
- Arrange the leaves on one sheet of wax paper, waxy side facing up, leaving space between each leaf.
- Place the second sheet of wax paper on top, waxy side facing down, so the two waxy sides touch.
- Lay a thin cloth or paper towel over the wax paper to protect your iron.
- Set the iron to low heat with no steam setting.
- Press the iron gently over the covered leaves for 10 to 15 seconds at a time, checking frequently.
- Once the wax paper looks fused and slightly glossy, let it cool completely before handling.
- Trim around each leaf shape with scissors, leaving a thin wax paper border.
Tips and variations
- Work with one layer of leaves at a time rather than overlapping them for the cleanest seal.
- If the wax paper does not fuse evenly, increase pressing time in small increments rather than raising the heat.
- Try layering several small leaves or a mix of colors in one sheet for a stained glass effect.
- Punch a hole in the corner and add ribbon to turn these into hanging ornaments or gift tags.
- For a glittery variation, sprinkle a tiny bit of fine glitter between the wax paper layers before sealing.
