This upgraded formula takes the classic vinegar-based weed killer to the next level by adding hydrogen peroxide for significantly faster and more thorough results. The combination of acetic acid from the vinegar and the oxidizing power of hydrogen peroxide creates a rapid desiccation effect that visibly wilts and browns weeds within hours rather than days. Salt disrupts the plant’s ability to draw water from the soil, biodegradable dish soap locks the solution onto leaf surfaces for maximum contact, and the peroxide breaks down harmlessly into water and oxygen once it has done its work. It is non-toxic, pet and wildlife friendly once dry, and leaves no harmful chemical residue in the soil or along your fence line. This is one of the most effective natural weed killers you can make at home with simple, inexpensive ingredients.
Ingredients
- 1 gallon white distilled vinegar (5% or use 10-20% horticultural vinegar for tough weeds)
- 1 cup hydrogen peroxide (standard 3% from the drugstore works well, or use food grade 6-12% for stronger results)
- 1 cup table salt or rock salt
- 1 tablespoon biodegradable liquid dish soap
Directions
- Pour the vinegar into a large bucket or directly into a clean garden sprayer.
- Add the salt and stir well until fully dissolved.
- Add the hydrogen peroxide and stir gently to combine.
- Add the dish soap last and stir slowly to avoid excess foaming.
- Transfer to a pump garden sprayer if mixing in a bucket.
- Apply on a hot, dry, sunny day with no rain expected for at least 24 to 48 hours.
- Spray directly and generously onto the leaves, stems, and base of weeds along the fence line, fully saturating the foliage.
- Avoid contact with any plants you want to keep, as this formula is non-selective and fast acting.
- Check results in 2 to 4 hours. Most weeds will show visible browning and wilting quickly.
- Reapply in 3 to 5 days for deep-rooted or stubborn perennial weeds.
Tips and variations
- Do not mix or store this formula in metal containers as hydrogen peroxide can react with certain metals. Use plastic or glass only.
- Mix only what you plan to use within a day or two as hydrogen peroxide loses potency over time once mixed with other ingredients.
- Store unmixed hydrogen peroxide in its original dark bottle away from light and heat to preserve its strength.
- For an even more aggressive formula on very tough weeds, use 10% food grade hydrogen peroxide and 20% horticultural vinegar together. Wear gloves and eye protection with these stronger concentrations.
- Omit the salt if you are working near areas where you may want to plant in the future, as salt can persist in soil.
- Once the solution is fully dry on the treated area, it is generally safe for pets and wildlife.
- Adding 10 to 15 drops of clove essential oil (eugenol) is a powerful natural booster that kills on contact and can be added to this formula for even faster results.
- This version works especially well in late morning to early afternoon when sun intensity is at its peak.
- For fence lines with grass encroaching from the base, a second application one week later will usually eliminate regrowth completely.
