Aphids are one of the most common garden pests and can devastate plants quickly if left unchecked. This simple soap spray works by coating the soft bodies of aphids and disrupting their cell membranes, killing them on contact without harming the plant. It is safe, fast, and incredibly effective. Adding a small amount of garlic or cayenne creates an additional deterrent that makes plants unpalatable to future invaders. This spray is safe to use on vegetables, herbs, flowers, and ornamentals right up to harvest.

Ingredients

• 3 oz distilled water
• 1 oz white vinegar
• 5 drops liquid dish soap
• 2 drops peppermint essential oil
• 1 drop clove essential oil

Directions

1. Combine distilled water and white vinegar in a clean 4 oz glass spray bottle.
2. Add dish soap carefully.
3. Add essential oils.
4. Cap and gently swirl to combine.
5. Spray directly onto aphid colonies, coating them thoroughly.
6. Focus on undersides of leaves where aphids congregate.
7. Repeat every 2 to 3 days until aphids are gone.

Tips and variations

• Rinse plants with plain water 24 hours after treatment to remove soap residue
• For heavy infestations, first knock aphids off with a strong stream of water before spraying
• Add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the bottle for extra deterrent power
• Works on spider mites, whiteflies, and soft-bodied insects as well
• Avoid spraying in full midday sun
