Hearty Ranch Water

Ranch Water is a Texas-born highball that earns its cult following through pure, effortless refreshment. The magic lies in the interplay of blanco tequila’s clean agave brightness, the sharp mineral bite of Topo Chico sparkling water, and a generous squeeze of fresh lime. Unlike sweeter cocktails, Ranch Water is bone-dry and bracingly crisp, making it dangerously easy to drink. It pairs beautifully with grilled fish tacos, ceviche, spicy guacamole, or anything off a summer grill. Serve it ice-cold in a longneck bottle for the classic Texas roadhouse experience, or over ice in a highball glass for a more polished presentation.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz blanco tequila
  • 1/2 oz fresh lime juice (about half a lime)
  • Topo Chico sparkling mineral water, to top (approximately 6 oz, well chilled)
  • Lime wedge or wheel, for garnish
  • Ice (optional, depending on serve style)

Directions

  1. If serving in a bottle, pour out or drink a few sips of a cold Topo Chico to make room.
  2. Add the tequila directly into the bottle.
  3. Squeeze in the fresh lime juice.
  4. Gently tip the bottle once or twice to combine. Do not shake.
  5. Garnish with a lime wedge tucked into the bottle neck and serve immediately.
  6. For a glass serve, fill a tall highball glass with ice, add tequila and lime juice, then top slowly with Topo Chico and stir once gently.

Tips and variations

  • Topo Chico is strongly preferred for its high carbonation and mineral quality. Substitutes like Perrier or Liquid Death sparkling water work but will change the character slightly.
  • For a spicy Ranch Water, add 2 to 3 slices of fresh jalapeño before topping with sparkling water.
  • A splash of fresh grapefruit juice adds a citrusy twist popular in West Texas variations.
  • Use a quality blanco tequila such as Espolon, Olmeca Altos, or Cimarron for the best result without overspending.
  • Keep everything as cold as possible. Warm tequila or flat water will flatten the drink significantly.
  • For a pitcher version, scale up tequila and lime juice, then add Topo Chico per glass at serving time to preserve carbonation.
