Base slime plus 5 fun variations.

Slime is endlessly satisfying to make and play with because of its unique non-Newtonian texture that flows like a liquid but holds its shape like a solid. The magic happens when polyvinyl alcohol in school glue cross-links with the borate ions in the activator, creating long, flexible polymer chains. The result is a smooth, stretchy, squishy material that is tactilely irresistible. You can customize it endlessly with color, glitter, foam beads, or scent. It stores well in an airtight container and is a great hands-on project for kids and adults alike.
Ingredients
Basic borax method
- 1/2 cup white school glue (like Elmer’s)
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 teaspoon borax powder
- 5 tablespoons warm water (for borax solution)
- Food coloring (optional)
- Glitter (optional)
Directions
- In a bowl, mix the glue and 1/2 cup water together until fully combined.
- Add food coloring or glitter to the glue mixture if desired and stir well.
- In a separate small cup, dissolve the borax powder in the 5 tablespoons of warm water. Stir until fully dissolved.
- Slowly pour the borax solution into the glue mixture a little at a time, stirring constantly.
- As you stir, the slime will begin to form and pull away from the sides of the bowl.
- Once it comes together, knead it with your hands for 2 to 3 minutes until smooth and stretchy.
- If it is too sticky, add a few more drops of borax solution. If it is too stiff, add a tiny bit of water.
- Store in an airtight container or zip-lock bag when not in use.
Variations
- Fluffy Slime: Replace half the glue with white shaving cream for a light, airy texture
- Glitter Slime: Add 2 tablespoons of fine glitter in step 2
- Glow in the Dark: Use glow-in-the-dark paint instead of food coloring
- Scented Slime: Add a few drops of essential oil or extract (vanilla, peppermint) in step 2
- Contact Solution Method (Borax-Free): Use 1/2 cup glue, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, and 1 tablespoon contact lens solution as the activator instead
Tips
- Use clear glue instead of white for a transparent or jewel-toned slime
- Warm hands help activate and smooth the slime faster
- If slime gets stringy or breaks apart, it needs more kneading
- Keep away from fabric, carpet, and hair as it can be difficult to remove
- Slime keeps for 1 to 2 weeks in a sealed container at room temperature
