Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons of finely chopped fresh herbs such as rosemary, thyme, or chives (optional)
  • 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add the cold butter cubes to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Slowly add the milk, stirring until the dough comes together. Do not overmix.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead it a few times. Pat the dough into a 1/2-inch thick rectangle.
  6. Use a round biscuit cutter to cut out biscuits. Place them on an ungreased baking sheet, spacing them about 1 inch apart.

    • Add 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese to the flour mixture after cutting in the butter.
