Its versatility also makes it a great accompaniment to soups or as a base for toppings like hummus or roasted vegetables. Freshly made and warm, this naan bread elevates any meal with its comforting and delicious taste.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 3-4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted butter
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing)
  • Optional: minced garlic, chopped cilantro, nigella seeds, or sesame seeds for topping

Directions

  1. Activate the Yeast
    • In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix the Dough
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine 3 cups of flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yogurt, vegetable oil (or melted butter), and the frothy yeast mixture.
    • Mix the ingredients together until a dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, gradually add more flour, a little at a time, until it becomes manageable.
  3. Knead the Dough
    • Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Let the Dough Rise
    • Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Divide and Shape the Dough
    • Punch down the dough and transfer it to a floured surface. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball.
    • Roll each ball into an oval or tear-drop shape, about 1/4-inch thick.
  6. Cook the Naan
    • Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Do not add oil.
    • Place a rolled-out dough piece onto the hot skillet. Cook for 1-2 minutes until bubbles form on the surface and the bottom is golden brown. Flip and cook the other side for another 1-2 minutes.
    • Remove the naan from the skillet and brush with melted butter. If desired, sprinkle with minced garlic, chopped cilantro, nigella seeds, or sesame seeds while the naan is still warm.
  7. Serve
    • Serve the naan warm with your favorite curry, stew, or as a side to any meal.
