Ingredients
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1 cup warm water (about 110°F)
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 3-4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup plain yogurt
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted butter
- 2 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing)
- Optional: minced garlic, chopped cilantro, nigella seeds, or sesame seeds for topping
Directions
- Activate the Yeast
- In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
- Mix the Dough
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 3 cups of flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yogurt, vegetable oil (or melted butter), and the frothy yeast mixture.
- Mix the ingredients together until a dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, gradually add more flour, a little at a time, until it becomes manageable.
- Knead the Dough
- Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Let the Dough Rise
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Divide and Shape the Dough
- Punch down the dough and transfer it to a floured surface. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball.
- Roll each ball into an oval or tear-drop shape, about 1/4-inch thick.
- Cook the Naan
- Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Do not add oil.
- Place a rolled-out dough piece onto the hot skillet. Cook for 1-2 minutes until bubbles form on the surface and the bottom is golden brown. Flip and cook the other side for another 1-2 minutes.
- Remove the naan from the skillet and brush with melted butter. If desired, sprinkle with minced garlic, chopped cilantro, nigella seeds, or sesame seeds while the naan is still warm.
- Serve
- Serve the naan warm with your favorite curry, stew, or as a side to any meal.
