Hearty wonton soup

Wontons are just so yummy, and filling, and this soup is downright slurp-able.

This Wonton Soup offers a comforting blend of savory broth, delicate wontons filled with pork or shrimp, and fresh vegetables like bok choy or spinach. For homemade wontons, mix ground meat with garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, and green onions before wrapping in wonton wrappers. Simmer in a fragrant broth of chicken stock, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, and green onions until tender. Alternatively, use store-bought wontons for convenience. Serve hot, garnished with green onions for added flavor. Pair with steamed rice or a side of Asian greens for a satisfying meal that combines light textures with rich, umami flavors.

Ingredients

  • For the Wontons
    • Wonton wrappers
    • 1/2-pound ground pork, ground chicken or shrimp (or a combination)
    • 2-3 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
    • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
    • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
    • 2 green onions, finely chopped
    • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For the Soup
    • 4 cups chicken broth
    • 2 cups water
    • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
    • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
    • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
    • 1 clove garlic, minced
    • 1-2 green onions, chopped
    • 1 cup bok choy or spinach, chopped (optional)
    • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Additional Ingredients (if using store-bought wontons)
    • Store-bought wontons (from the refrigerated section)

Directions

  1. Prepare the Wontons (if making from scratch)
    • In a bowl, mix together ground pork or shrimp, garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, grated ginger, green onions, salt, and pepper.
    • Place about 1 teaspoon of filling in the center of each wonton wrapper.
    • Moisten the edges with water, fold over to form a triangle (or another desired shape), and press to seal.
  2. Prepare the Soup
    • In a large pot, bring chicken broth and water to a simmer.
    • Add soy sauce, sesame oil, grated ginger, minced garlic, and chopped green onions. Simmer for about 5-7 minutes. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
  3. Cook the Wontons
    • If using homemade wontons: Bring a separate pot of water to a boil. Add the wontons and cook until they float to the surface, about 4-5 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside.
    • If using store-bought wontons: Add them directly to the simmering soup. Cook according to the package instructions, usually about 4-5 minutes until they are heated through and float to the surface.
  4. Optional (if using fresh vegetables)
    • If using, add chopped bok choy or spinach to the soup during the last 2-3 minutes of cooking.
  5. Serve
    • Ladle the soup into bowls, ensuring each serving has some wontons and vegetables.
    • Garnish with additional chopped green onions if desired.

This recipe provides flexibility whether you prefer to make your own wontons or use store-bought ones. Enjoy your delicious homemade wonton soup!
