Hearty Crispy Baked Tofu

Crispy baked tofu, savory with a satisfying crunch.

This crispy baked tofu is a delightful combination of texture and flavor. Marinated in soy sauce, olive oil, and spices, the tofu absorbs a savory, umami-rich essence. Coating it with cornstarch creates a satisfyingly crunchy exterior while keeping the inside tender. Baking at a high temperature enhances its crispiness without excessive oil. The subtle garlic and onion notes, along with a hint of smoked paprika, add depth and complexity. This tofu tastes good because it balances a crispy texture with a flavorful, well-seasoned profile, making it a versatile and delicious addition to any meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 block (14 oz) firm or extra-firm tofu
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari (for gluten-free)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch or arrowroot powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  1. Press the Tofu
    • Drain the tofu and press it to remove excess moisture. To do this, wrap the tofu in a clean kitchen towel or paper towels and place a heavy object (like a skillet or a book) on top. Let it sit for at least 15-20 minutes.
  2. Preheat the Oven
    • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
  3. Prepare the Tofu
    • Once the tofu is pressed, cut it into 1-inch cubes and place them in a large mixing bowl.
  4. Marinate the Tofu
    • Add the soy sauce (or tamari), olive oil, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika (if using), salt, and pepper to the bowl with the tofu. Gently toss to coat the tofu evenly with the marinade.
  5. Coat with Cornstarch
    • Sprinkle the cornstarch (or arrowroot powder) over the marinated tofu and toss again to coat evenly. The cornstarch will help the tofu become crispy when baked.
  6. Bake the Tofu
    • Spread the tofu cubes in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, flipping the tofu halfway through, until the tofu is golden brown and crispy on the edges.
  7. Serve
    • Remove the tofu from the oven and let it cool slightly. Serve it hot as a main dish, or add it to salads, grain bowls, stir-fries, or wraps.
